1/6/09 - WrestlingGehling Named NSIC Wrestler of the Week Tony Gehling, a senior from Grand Meadow, Minnesota, has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Wrestler of the Week for the first week of 2009. This honor is the seventh NSIC Player of the Week award earned by an Upper Iowa student-athlete this year and the first time a UIU wrestler has earned the award this season. Gehling won his third tournament title in a row on Saturday at the "Flash" Flanigan Open hosted by Loras College. The Grand Meadow, Minnesota native went 4-0 in the 184 pound weight class including three wins by fall (:14, :45, 2:43) and a major decision (14-1). The senior's record improved to 18-3 on the season and he currently is riding a 14-match win streak. During the streak, Gehling has recorded 9 wins by major decision, technical fall, or by fall. 1/6/09 - WrestlingUpper Iowa Holds Steady at #8 in NWCA Top 20 Poll The Upper Iowa University Wrestling Program has remained steady in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches' Association's Top 20 Poll released this afternoon. The Peacocks received 95 points to earn the #8 ranking. Upper Iowa also has three individuals in the rankings. Senior Tyler Mumbulo is listed as the #4 wrestler in the nation at 125 pounds with a 5-1 record. Junior Travis Eggers dropped one spot to #2 at 157 pounds with a 13-5 record. Mitch Norton remained ranked #8 at 174 pounds with an 8-0 mark. (MORE)
1/5/09 - Wrestling#8 Peacocks Compete at Flash Open The Upper Iowa wrestling team, currently ranked #8 in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll, traveled to Loras College this past Saturday to compete in the Flash Open. The team entered the tournament as a final tune up before the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals this coming Saturday and Sunday at the University of Northern Iowa. The team sent ten wrestlers to compete and seven returned as place winners. The Peacocks were led by champion Tony Gehling (184). Cody Northern (unattached) finished second at 197 pounds, while Trevor Franklin took home third place at 133 pounds. Mitch Schultz (unattached) placed fourth at 174 pounds. The final three Peacock grapplers to place all took home sixth place finishes. (MORE)
