1/5/09 - Wrestling#8 Peacocks Compete at Flash Open The Upper Iowa wrestling team, currently ranked #8 in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll, traveled to Loras College this past Saturday to compete in the Flash Open. The team entered the tournament as a final tune up before the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals this coming Saturday and Sunday at the University of Northern Iowa. The team sent ten wrestlers to compete and seven returned as place winners. The Peacocks were led by champion Tony Gehling (184). Cody Northern (unattached) finished second at 197 pounds, while Trevor Franklin took home third place at 133 pounds. Mitch Schultz (unattached) placed fourth at 174 pounds. The final three Peacock grapplers to place all took home sixth place finishes. (MORE)
1/3/09 - Men's BasketballUIU's Upset Bid Falls Shy Against #19 Northern State The Upper Iowa men's basketball team played host to the #19 Wolves of Northern State. The two teams played a physical battle throughout their forty minutes of action. Northern State opened the game with very aggressive defense which led to a 29-11 lead with 6:40 to play in the half. Upper Iowa found their stride over the remainder of the half as they outscored the Wolves 13-5. The Peacocks headed to the locker room trailing 34-24. In the half, UIU grabbed an 18-11 advantage on the boards, but 13 turnovers slowed the UIU attack. The Peacocks continued to outplay the Wolves as the second half began. The men in blue outscored the #19 team in the country 27-17 over the first thirteen minutes. A.J. Adkins hit a game-tying three, 51-51, with just over seven minutes to play. (MORE)
1/3/09 - Women's BasketballPeacocks Second Half Rally Comes Up Short The Peacock women's basketball team ran into trouble during the first half of Saturday evening's game. Upper Iowa hosted the Wolves of Northern State University. NSU dominated the first half on both ends of the court. The Wolves shot 48% in the opening twenty minutes and held the Peacocks to 16%. Upper Iowa trailed 37-13 heading into the locker room. NSU outscored UIU 20-0 in the paint and 10-2 off turnovers. Krista Rabenberg gave the Peacock shooters fits as she registered 6 blocked shots. UIU showed a lot of fight in the opening minutes of the second half cutting the lead to sixteen, 47-31, with thirteen minutes to play. A Melissa Fitz three-pointer prompted a Northern State timeout as the Peacocks cut the deficit to thirteen, 47-34. Northern State seemed to make the most of their timeout as they went on an 11-5 run to lead 58-39. After a UIU timeout, Britney Iredale hit a trifecta to break up the run. (MORE)
